ABSTRACT ONLY:
The $32-million rehabilitation of the William A. Stickel Memorial Bridge, a 60-year-old, six-lane vertical lift structure in New Jersey, is one of the first major projects in that state to use the fast-track approach known as accelerated bridge construction. A strong spirit of partnership and good communication between the major stakeholders, together with a vigorous community outreach program, helped to overcome the various roadblocks and delays that threatened to undermine the tight schedule. In the end, the project team managed to cut approximately 15 months from the design and construction phases, proving that this innovative approach can work even for challenging structures.
