Extremely poor soils characterized the site chosen by the New York Mets for their new stadium, Citi Field—essentially in the parking lot of Shea Stadium prior to its demolition. Like most jurisdictions in Southern California, the City of Yucaipa must manage its water resources judiciously as it endeavors to protect itself from flooding while ensuring adequate water supplies. In a model of integrated watershed management, Yucaipa recently constructed a series of three detention basins along Oak Glen Creek that will do more than simply detain floodwaters. The basins will also improve downstream water quality, promote the infiltration of storm water, and facilitate groundwater recharge.
