Tight-Fit Tunneling

ABSTRACT ONLY:

Urban development past and present imposed severe alignment and construction restrictions on a new tunnel bored beneath the Allegheny River for Pittsburgh’s light-rail system. Careful preparation and innovative operation enabled a tunnel-boring machine to complete the twin bores successfully despite challenging ground conditions, numerous obstructions, steep grades, tight curves, and shallow cover.
