The PS-10 power plant, near Sevilla (Seville), Spain, is the first commercial generating facility to be powered by the sun. Tower of Power

By Gonzalo García-Sobrinos, Ignasi Salvador-Villà, ICCP, and Jesús Serradilla-Echarri

PS-10, Europe’s first commercial generating facility to be powered by the sun, features a 115 m high tower in which a central receiver converts solar radiation from hundreds of large mirrors into electricity. In addition to accommodating large loads, the concrete tower had to provide an aesthetically pleasing appearance that would blend in with its surroundings.

Ready to Roll

By Dan Johnson, P.E., and Steve Kingsley, P.E., M.ASCE

Radiation portal monitors must be installed at all container terminal gates to certify the safety of the goods moving through them. In the past, this has led to traffic bottlenecks, but three new design options demonstrate how gates can be configured so that traffic will flow more smoothly.

Back on Its Haunches

By John C. Shanks, Jr., P.E., M.ASCE

An architecturally significant replacement bridge in Hamilton, Ohio, has stretched the design limits of deeply haunched, spliced girders of precast concrete and shown that a project of this type can be carried out without restricting waterway traffic below.

A Balanced Approach

By Michael S. Johnson, P.E., Larry Wyeno, P.E., and Steve Bosshart

A water treatment project in Longmont, Colorado, that accounts both for possible changes in future treatment technologies and for the preservation of structures of historical importance proves that owners and design/build teams can work together closely and congenially, sharing risks and rewards for the benefit of all.
