Lake Street Lessons

ABSTRACT ONLY:

The recent design for the reconstruction of a 4 mi (6.4 km) long segment of Lake Street in Minneapolis highlights the challenges encountered in delivering a context-sensitive project within the center of a city in which a densely built environment already exists. But the lessons of the Lake Street project also offer a warning: A community-focused approach, despite its good intentions, will not always overcome the strong institutional biases that often drive street design processes away from community-building outcomes and toward traffic-moving outcomes.
