Culminating a multi-year effort, the publication The Vision for Civil Engineering in 2025 articulates a global, aspirational vision for civil engineering and the role civil engineers should play in that future.
The report represents the collective wisdom of more than 60 civil engineer and non-engineer leaders from around the world who gathered at an ASCE-organized summit in June 2006. The report looks at what the world will be like in 2025 and the many forces affecting the civil engineering profession and society’s quality of life.
The vision sees civil engineers serving as master builders, environmental stewards, innovators and integrators; managers of risk and uncertainty; and leaders in shaping public policy. There are only two futures for civil engineering around the globe—the one the profession creates for itself or, in a void, the one others create for civil engineering—and civil engineers came to the 2006 summit to choose their profession’s future. In order to turn this vision into reality, many professionals and organizations around the globe must dedicate themselves to ambitious efforts. The Vision for Civil Engineering in 2025 is that call to action.
